Liberty

At Tinora Middle School, one staff member stands out for her calming presence, fluffy ears, and unconditional love: Liberty, our certified therapy dog. Since joining the Tinora team, Liberty has brought joy, comfort, and support to students and staff alike—and it's safe to say, she's become a true Ram favorite.

A Little About Liberty

Liberty is a three-year-old labradoodle who joined our school community thanks to Middle School Principal Lisa Maxwell and staff member Mr. Bailey, who also serve as her handlers. While her exact breeder’s name has been forgotten, we do know one fun fact—our Building and Grounds Supervisor, Scott Beckman’s poodle is her dad, which, in a fun twist, makes Scott ‘Grandpa’ to Liberty!

Liberty was truly born for this role. She began training the summer before her first school year, working daily with a professional trainer and her handlers right here at Tinora. She progressed faster than most therapy dogs—her trainer even said this was her “true calling.” Liberty continues to receive regular check-ins to ensure she’s doing well and not developing any bad habits (though the occasional diva moment over fancy treats might be forgiven!).

Her Job—and Why It Matters

Liberty’s mission is simple: to be a calm, friendly companion to everyone she meets. She regularly visits classrooms, greets students in the halls, and is often found lounging in the cafeteria booths, soaking up scratches, cuddles, and the occasional Goldfish cracker.

“She helps students reduce their stress and anxiety and increase their feelings of safety and comfort,” says Principal Maxwell. “She supports inclusion and helps build community. Liberty is welcoming to all and helps students feel welcome here.”

For students with anxiety or emotional challenges, Liberty has made a profound difference. Some sit or lie beside her, brushing her fur or simply resting quietly in her presence. These moments provide comfort, grounding, and emotional support, often helping students return to class feeling ready to learn.

“We’ve noticed a big difference,” Maxwell adds. “Students are more relaxed, and it’s easier for them to open up. Liberty helps us get to the root of what’s bothering them much quicker.”

Liberty After Hours

While her school days are filled with emotional support and hallway hellos, Liberty also has a life outside of Tinora.

She’s a proud competitor at the Henry County Fair, where she teams up with her human sister, Luci, in dog agility competitions. Her favorite challenges? Running through tunnels and climbing the A-frame. Liberty has even brought home a few medals, and she loves training alongside the other dogs throughout the summer.

Liberty also makes appearances at community events. Most recently, she was invited to a fundraiser for the Humane Society at State Bank on Friday, June 20th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will feature a variety of dogs, dog treats, and a food truck, with proceeds supporting the Humane Society.

Liberty also makes periodic visits to the IEC to support students during the school year. While she enjoys cheering on Tinora at music and sports events, the excitement can be exhausting for her, so most of her energy is saved for the school day.

What Liberty Loves

Liberty’s favorite treats include Goldfish crackers, Beggin’ Strips, and regular dog bones. Fancy treats? Not for her—this girl knows what she likes!

She loves getting scratched under the chin and on her back, but isn’t a fan of being petted on the top of her head or ears. She’s gentle and sweet, but like all dogs, she appreciates a respectful approach.

Tips for Approaching Liberty (or Any Dog):

  • Let the dog see and sniff you first.

  • Don’t rush up or reach over the top of their head.

  • Speak calmly and use slow, gentle movements.

  • Always ask the handler before petting.

Sometimes adults rush up to Liberty in the office, and she runs away—not because she doesn’t like them, but because they spooked her. With a little patience and kindness, Liberty will happily accept your affection.

Liberty is more than a pet—she’s a source of comfort, connection, and calm. She reminds us every day of the importance of kindness and the quiet power of simply being there for someone. Whether she’s curled up beside a student in need, strutting her stuff at the fair, or making new friends at a community event, Liberty is always doing what she does best: being a very good girl.
